Planning your first holiday or business trip to Poland? Wondering how to use money in this growing European country? Not sure in which currency you will be able to pay? Looking for an iPhone currency calculator app for calculating currency conversions? No worries! As a native Pole living in Poland, I will explain to you everything you need to know about using the native money - Polish zloty - in my home country. Welcome to the Polish Currency Traveler's Guide.
🇵🇱 Polish Zloty [PLN] - złoty (zł)
In short - the official currency that is in use in Poland is Polish Zloty (PLN), and 1 złoty is subdivided into 100 groszy (gr). Polish złoty has its name since 1919. The currency is stable, and an exchange rate fluctuates between 3 and 4 złoty for a United States dollar (USD), 4 and 4.50 złoty for a euro (EUR), and 5 and 6 złoty for a Pound sterling (GBP).
💶 What does the Polish zloty (PLN) look like?
This is what Polish zloty (PLN) notes (banknotes) look like - 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 zloties denominations.
There is also a 500 zł denomination, but it's rarely spotted in circulation (although an ATM machine can give one, so don't be surprised). If you will be paying with the 500 PLN in your hand, vendors can be suspicious - it's totally normal, as we don't see 500 denomination on a daily basis.
And this is what Polish zloty (PLN) coins look like - 5, 2, and 1 zloty, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 grosz (groszy) denominations. Sometimes a vendor in a shop can give you your rest in the form of a 2 zloties collector edition (with some castle, city, or a person graphic on it) - it's also a fully legal coin you can use to buy something, but if you are a tourist, I would just get it as a souvenir from Poland (a lot of Poles actually collect those coins).
